So I have two items in my baby etsy store. These postcards are one. I don’t have any real prints available yet. I’m waiting for my next paycheck so I can afford to buy the prints in the first place! You know how it goes. I’ll give everyone a heads up when those are available!
My store.
danthom: How much success have you found selling artwork on Etsy? Have you ever tried any other online art selling services?
I'm curious because I have some work that I'm interested in selling, but I don't think my local art community is the venue for it. Also, it's mostly larger canvas pieces... but any advice you could share would be more than appreciated. :D
Well… I only have three items in my shop and only one is an original and it is a tiny thing… I really haven’t sold anything yet, but I also just don’t have much in my store and so I haven’t really publicized it. However, here is the impression I get about selling original art on Etsy after (sort of) doing it myself and researching this exact question:
* It seems that most of the items on sale are prints and not original pieces.
* The original art that is for sale is rarely over $100 and is small in size.
* The art has to fit into the general Etsy aesthetic for people to be interested in it.
The only other service I’ve used to sell prints is deviantArt’s print service. The print quality is fine—they do photo prints, not giclee—but the artist barely profits from a sale. It’s definitely not a way to make real money. Have you considered getting prints made of your paintings? It would require paying for the prints and image capture of your painting (if it is too big to scan), but it would make your art more accesible, perhaps.
I’m sure that some of you have a ton of Etsy experience! Any thoughts? Direct them to the comments so troubledbyinsects can see what you have to say!
I’ve added some more items to my etsy store, including this stationery I made. I need a light box, and I seriously need to work on my photos… You can go check out the shop now, but I’ll be posting some items here on tumblr in the coming days. So far all I’ve got is some modestly priced original art and a couple of postcards.
I’m working on getting a permit number so I can be exempt from paying tax when I buy my prints and postcards. When that happens I’ll have more things for sale! Tax in California is sooooo high…
I’m selling the originals of these guys in my etsy store! Yellow here and orange here.
Added this stationery to my store! Anchors away!
Prints Now Available!
My first test order of prints has arrived and they are now available in my etsy shop! They turned out really nice, so I will be getting more made. Thanks to those of you who have suggested some of your favorites. Keep your eyes peeled; they’ll be available soon.
Here are the three that are for sale as of now:

Available here, here, and here.
EDIT: Ben K. bought some right away! Very fitting since he is one of my longest-time followers.
New Prints in the Store!
I’ve put some new prints in my etsy store! Check it out.

This guy (the original!) is available in my shop! Right there.
EDIT: Sold!
➜ Mini Paintings
I’ve opened a section in my shop for mini paintings. These are original watercolor paintings that are tiny, averaging 4x4”. The best part is that they are all between $5.00-$7.00! I want to make an affordable way for people to have original art. I’m making quite a few, so I won’t post all of them here; maybe just a few.
