Art by Gabrielle Rose. I live in Oakland, CA. Watercolor and ink are my favorite media. Get in touch at hello@drawgabbydraw.com.

Hi there,, i always draw sort of a "nice" heads but i always struggle to draw hair no matter how i tried its almost all the time ugly unless a miracle happened by a mistake,, so here is my : can you share your hair and smoke drawing techniques?

Well, if you want to see really good hair, look at Adria Mercuri’s tumblr. You’ll notice that Adria (and all good artists) draw hair as a texture instead of drawing each individual strand of hair. When you look at someone’s hair in real life, you’re not really seeing millions of little lines; you’re seeing a solid surface made of those tiny pieces.

I’ll be the first to admit that I do not really follow this rule, but I’m usually not going for a realistic look in the hair I draw. It’s ok to break the rules sometimes to achieve the effect you want. Hope that helps a little!

Gabby, please, what's the paper that you use and the watercolours?

Hi! You can find information about the materials I use on my About page, and here’s a detailed post comparing the two types of watercolor paper I use. Hope that helps!

Settlers of CATan.
I have an actual update coming up but really you can’t not post a cat-in-a-box picture.

I had an urge to draw little lines yesterday and did just that for a couple of hours. I used a Speedball dip pen and Winsor & Newton blue ink.

Details best seen at the post’s permalink.

An inky cap mushroom. When I was little, I’d always find ink cap mushrooms on the side of my friend’s house, and I thought they were really cool, all drippy and gooey.

Watercolor, india ink, gold gel pen. 9x12”.

I saw your post about Fialta, I was so excited to see the album art. It's wonderful. I wish I was as good as you. Anywayyy, I decided to check them out, and they're awesome. Are there any more bands you could recommend? Personal favorites or just something totally random and new? Thanks. :)

For reference, here’s the post about album artwork I did for the band Fialta. (Glad you like their music!)

Oh man. It’s hard to recommend bands because people are so particular when it comes to music! I listen to a range of stuff (like most people). According to my last fm profile, here are some of my most listened to bands from the past 6 months:

Pablo Casals (beautiful old recordings of Bach’s cello suites), Grimes, Grizzly Bear, Chad VanGaalen, Luluc, Flaco Jimenez (Tejano music legend), Django Django, Neon Indian, Willie Nelson, Nick Drake, Banda de Turistas, Soap&Skin…

Of course I like lots of other bands. What I listen to depends on what’s going on in my life or what I am drawing.

Maybe you will like something in that list! (Also does anyone else feel like you’re revealing super personal sensitive information when you tell the internet what music you’re into? I do. Like you caught me in my underwear or something.)

First I made a hill. Now I’m adding a mushroom person to it.

I made this watercolor circle a long time ago and finally decided to put something in the middle of it—a mouse.

Watercolor, ink.

I have started and not finished so many things these past few weeks, except for maybe this drawing. However, I think maybe I will finish this one today or tomorrow.

Whoa! A very detailed submission to Gab Collab by artistictundra. Madeleine posts her collaborations to her tumblr, if you’d like to see more.
Gab Collab is a project where I post a watercolor blob and you draw or collage or whatever on top of it.

A Saturday drawing for those of you who are around.
Since I think people will ask, this is made of Dr. Ph. Martin’s liquid watercolor (black, blue), Higgins ink (red), and india ink for the line work on hot pressed watercolor paper.

Cat

So if you follow me on twitter you know our cat is kind of rude. Well, I made this little doodle with Dr. Ph. Martin’s liquid watercolor. It was finally dry, sitting next to my printer waiting to be scanned. The cat likes to hang out next to my printer.

She also really likes licking anything that I make with Dr. Ph. Martin’s liquid watercolor. If I leave a drawing unattended, she will just lick it. I heard her licking this drawing, but by the time I stopped her it was too late:

That face used to be black. Now it is not. Because it’s in my cat’s stomach, I guess.

After I took the above photo I left the doodle on my desk only to catch her at it again:

So, that’s my stink butt cat.
