Art by Gabrielle Rose. I live in Oakland, CA. Lots of your frequently asked questions are likely answered in this EatSleepDraw video interview, but if you don’t have time to watch it, please read on.
Have you studied art professionally?
No. I have never been to art school, and apart from some basic art classes in high school and college, I haven’t really studied art in a classroom setting. I am mostly self-taught.
How long have you been drawing and painting?
Since I was a child! I started to settle into my style in my late teens and early twenties.
Are you an artist for a living?
I don’t support myself by making art (although I make it every chance I get). I used to be a teacher, but now work a more low-key day job so I have more time to make art.
What inspires you?
I am hugely inspired by the artists of the Golden Age of Illustration, such as Kay Nielsen, Arthur Rackham, and Edmund Dulac. I also like Aubrey Beardsley. Anime is currently a growing influence in my art (although animation in general has always been a significant stylistic influence in my work). I am also inspired by my childhood fears, nature, and other creative minds.
What materials do you use in your art?
Please see these posts for all the info! Lots of people ask me what paper I use. I use watercolor blocks; the paper is adhered on all four sides to prevent warping. Here’s a post with a short explanation of my watercolor technique. And here are two time lapse videos of me drawing and painting: ink, paint.
Do you sell your art?
Yes. I sell prints and things in my shop, drawgabbydraw.goodsie.com. Feel free to contact me about any originals you see posted here.
Can I get a tattoo of one of your works?
I do not have time to do free tattoo commissions; however, if you would like to use one of my existing works, please contact me and let me know. I’d love to see pictures! I am also open to paid commissions.
